Douglas Design Studio

Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc)
I am the sole owner of Douglas Design Studio, and an award-winning interior designer. My work is informed by my passion for art, extensive travels and genuine delight in the perfect detailing. I combine antique pieces with modern furnishings in innovative ways, producing inviting rooms that are rich with history, yet fresh and contemporary.

Between graduating from Ryerson University in 1989 and founding my own company in 1995, I honed my ability to develop both innovative concepts and exacting working drawings.

How would you describe your personal design style?
I am personally drawn to clean, tidy spaces, good light and access to nature. I like each item in my space to be well designed and well crafted, because I believe there is a small joy each time you use something of good quality. I love books, so a little pile gives me happiness.

Where does your design inspiration come from?
My clients. I start with their perceptions and experiences. Each home we design is tailored to meet the individual needs of each family. Clients enter with a dream, a vision, often cloudy, of what their home should be. Our job is to listen to and listen through what they say (and how they say it), to offer them more than they imagined. We clarify the vision.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
Every direction it would seem. Minimalism lives side by side with maximalism today. We seem to be searching for immersive environments. I see my clients dreaming of a total juxtaposition to the streetscape-inspired front facade of their home, to enjoy a more contemporary interior and rear garden experience they dream of.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2021 and beyond.
Colours – I see a warmer palette forward, though colour expression varies by region – generally I see a trend toward colours that soothe and cocoon in 2021.
Environment – recyclable and natural materials and less waste.
Local over global – our borders are tightening so I see a rise in interest for locally made, quality goods, this is also to address supply chain interruptions, at least in the short term.
Finishes – I see a move away from shiny metal in stock to soft matte textures mixed with shimmery satins and silks for contrast.
Handmade – to support local, quality handmade goods.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?
As designers we know how to balance materials, pattern, colour and texture. Regardless of the style or colours that one wishes to use in the space, a design scheme for any home needs to be cohesive and comforting for the individual who resides there.

While artistry and design are important, the most seminal element to address is pleasure and sanctuary it offers the homeowner.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?
It’s important to recognize and honour innovative ideas and designs. It’s not only an achievement from the perspective of the designer and architect, it’s also a source of inspiration for many others.  It is important to understand how design is interpreted around the world.

What projects are you currently working on?
Among several custom homes, we are working on a four-level luxury condominium building in Toronto. Most units are a full floor with morning sun and evening sunset light. The rooftop with have 2 expansive private gardens for the upper units.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?
My favourite client is one that is educated and curious, so their project promises to be full of tailored details and is very well considered. I love it when I am challenged to go beyond what we all see daily, to transcend style and trend to discover the very source of an experience.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?
I start everything with a small stack of crisp white paper and a fresh pen. Beyond that all you need is a bit of imagination.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?
To discover, in spite of travel lockdowns and restrictions, what the world has to offer. I am also currently working on a certificate in creative writing which I find immensely enjoyable satisfying. I also intend to build an net-zero, sustainable cradle-to-grave passive-house in the hills east of the city. Definitely not bored!

Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself and your daily inspirations:

Your most treasured possession? My own curiosity
Your favourite holiday destination? France, anywhere really.
Your favourite book? Rebecca Solnit’s memoir “A Field Guide to Getting Lost”
Your favourite food? Homemade Jam on fresh baked scones
Your favourite way to spend an afternoon?Reading
If you weren’t a designer, what would you be?
A furniture maker
