Hali MacDonald Interiors Inc. have been shortlisted for Kitchen Design Over £100,000 Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2021.

For Hali MacDonald Interiors’ personal project, the goal was to design her home around comfort and approachability, whilst still feeling layered and collected. Blending traditional and modern styles for a home which is fresh and clean but not empty, and where the beauty is found in the details of the design.

After a decade of living abroad, the family wanted a place to call their own – one which felt like a reflection of their personalities and their young family. Though a new build home, Hali wanted it to feel established and welcoming. She was determined to give the property the warmth that she feels within older homes. The colours and materials are all earthy tones, and the materials that were sourced such as stone, cedar, copper, and brick were chosen for how well they age. Talented artisans were used throughout the home, including carpenters that worked on creating the architectural staircase, and a talented metal smith that fabricated the custom blackened steel and brass range hood, plaster crown moldings and vent covers with impeccable attention to detail.  The finished product gives an old world feel with modern day practicality, blending antiques and traditional elements with clean lines.

With the understanding that design, colour, and lighting all have tremendous ability to impact our moods and everyday life, Hali MacDonald Interiors holds the belief that having a comforting and beautiful home to call your own is of utmost importance. She blends styles and personalities throughout the home mixing new pieces with antiques, traditional with modern, bright whites with colours, pattern and texture. Each are combined in a way that complements the other without feeling overbearing. The living areas of this family home were designed to be timeless. They are comfortable and functional for the family but also welcoming to the guests.

The kitchen is bright and open, with clean white cabinetry and tiling grounded by natural wooden beams and darker hues in the flooring. Remaining functional for family life the space avoids feeling cluttered or hollow. The neutral colour palette appeals to all tastes, though the antique touches, brassware, and traditional design elements are a nod to Hali’s strong appreciation for antiques. The space exudes casual elegance, where the more you look at it, the more you appreciate it. As a lover of the outdoors, Hali MacDonald Interiors draws a lot of inspiration from nature and elements in their natural state – this influence is noticeable in the materials used in the kitchen as well as in the foliage details and drops of colour.
