Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc)
I have a bachelor in Interior and Spatial Design from Chelsea College of Art and Design. I worked in London for several big names and moved back to Oslo after 11 years. I merged my company with Linda Gram and we now work under the name Gathe + Gram and work on high end residential and hospitality projects.
How would you describe your personal design style?
My personal style is a mix of my background. It has a lot of influence from my time in the UK, but also a mix of international inspiration and my Scandinavian background. I love creating unique spaces that have a lot of custom and vintage pieces, a home should reflect the person living there.
Where does your design inspiration come from?
I am always inspired by my travels all over the world. I love seeing and mixing styles, old and new. Instagram is always great to see the newest trends and styles from all over the world, as well as attending design fairs around the world to keep up with current trends, not so much to use them, but its important to be aware of what the general market is up to.
In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
There are too many generic designed homes out there, show homes without any personal touches. I feel personalized spaces that are designed with the client in mind are the way forward. More personality in the designs, dare to be different and to mix old and new.
Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2022 and beyond.
Vintage, custom, quality over quantity, personalization and locally sourced.
If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?
Do an overall concept before purchasing individual items. This way you can easily see if it all goes together or not. Don’t purchase all your items from one supplier, mix it up, old and new.
How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?
The international Design and Architecture Awards if one of the few awards where smaller companies can really make an impression and get international recognition. It is important to celebrate each other and lift each other up.
What projects are you currently working on?
We are currently working on a lot of exciting projects. We have two large villas outside of New York, several villas in Oslo, 3 restaurants in west Norway and 3 hotel refurbishments ongoing. One of our hotel projects is opening this September and we are very excited to finally be able to show what we have been working on the past year.
What was your favourite project to work on and why?
I don’t think I have one specific project. I love working on different projects and various styles. I have worked on everything from Private jets, homes, hotels, restaurants, offices to private yachts. I love the variety and challenges that come with doing something new and want to continue developing myself.
What was your most challenging project to work on and why?
With my business partner Linda we did a 5* Luxury hotel that is a member of Leading Hotels of the world. We worked 24/7 on this hotel for 3.5 years and we were so exhausted by the end of that job. Seeing it all finished and peoples reactions makes it all worth it in the end tho.
Which products/services could you not live without when designing?
Our technical programs, material room and our talented design team.
What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?
We would love to branch out and do more international projects. Seeing how well it has worked with the projects in New York we are ready to take on more challenges overseas. We would also like to produce more of our products locally and we are looking at improving production routes for our projects. An international hotel would be on the top of our list.
