Kristen Elizabeth Design
Kristen Elizabeth Design have been shortlisted for Interior Design Scheme – Americas Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2021.
A tribute to modern architecture, designed by Lee Skolnick, this home resides on the edge of a wetlands preserve of fourteen acres in Sag Harbor, NY. The design concept began with a suggestion from Kristen Fiore of Kristen Elizabeth Design to create a home that was over/under in style – living areas upstairs and sleeping rooms on the first floor – in order to capture the beauty of the surrounding landscape. The 5,000 square foot home offers 5 bedrooms with direct access to the pool and flower garden. The upper level offers sweeping views from every room of the treetops, pond, pool and extensive pasture.
Kristen Fiore of Kristen Elizabeth Design advised on all interior design elements from surface selections to furnishings. They worked closely with the clients to blend treasured family heirlooms with styles that are trend forward, but timeless in design. Furnishings and textiles are neutral and softly hued, and rooms are fluidly linked with old and new.
Kristen Elizabeth Design added playful aspects to bedrooms and hallways through wallcoverings from Abigail Edwards. The main lower hall is covered in a blue thorny vine wall covering that opens onto the main entry foyer, a 2-storey open space flanked in blue stone and topped with a cedar ceiling. The designers deliberately chose this wallcovering to create a feeling of working your way up from the earth, to emerge in awe and wonder and light. Additional wall coverings were applied to bedrooms to give each space its own feeling and identity.
The kitchen design was the heart of the home. Kristen Elizabeth Design added a zinc clad fireplace surround in the corner and a whimsical pink printed linen Cisco home sofa for seating. Cabinets were kept light and white to keep focus on the views from the windows. In the living spaces, the vision was to break out of the comfortable traditional style they were accustomed to and add elements and lines outside their comfort zone with a modern and minimal vibe. Furnishings and textiles provide soft colour with fluid lines and minimal pattern. The effort was to create spaces that did not take the space too seriously, to pull objects that evoked joy and calm and a bit of whimsy. It is a true reflection of who the clients are and how they approach life.
