Lastein Interiors
Lastein Interiors have been shortlisted for the Restoration / Regeneration Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2022.
Chalon House is a renovation and regeneration of a Grade II listed Georgian house, along with the construction of a modern rear extension. The vision was to create a family home whilst also paying homage to the house’s historic past as a gathering point for the area’s local artists and intellectuals; hosting people such as Oscar Wilde and Virgina Woolf.
Lastein Interiors respected the home’s English origin while incorporating the clean and minimal Scandinavian aesthetic of the family living in it, creating a style reminiscent of Japan. The ground floor is designed in an elegant Victorian style to celebrate the house’s heritage using antique mirrors, silver and green wallpaper, and bespoke cabinetry. The original fireplace hearths were cleaned and oiled, and the fireplace surrounds were restored to match the original.
The sandstone flagstone floors in the masculine smoked-oak and stainless-steel kitchen are warm to the touch while being in keeping with the original use of this area as a kitchen and scullery. The original staircase leads you up to the bedrooms, which needed to be bright and warm but not without their own ode to the period of the property. Ornate cornices and Georgian-style cabinets frame the teenagers’ rooms without being overbearing and allowing the personalities of each of them to come through. The master bedroom underwent the greatest structural change as it opened the ceilings all the way up, exposing a rustic yet elegant beam.
The challenge and necessity for the rear extension came due to wanting to preserve the original structure, fenestration and facade while modernising the home to allow a substantial kitchen and dining area to play its role as the heart of the house. Japanese-inspired ‘floating’ roofs are connected by thoughtfully positioned glazing; one covering the kitchen, and the other a hyggelig sunken dining area with sleek Danish-inspired marble, iron and wood. The whole space is primarily glass and merges the interior with the exterior.
Throughout the house is a clear feeling of stability through equilibrium – the constant balancing act of yin yang. The newly constructed modern extension built of delicate glazing and floating roofs, paired with the restored historic fabric of the Georgian house is the clearest example of this complimentary balance.
