Ledbury Studio

The Malta Project by Ledbury Studio

Ledbury Studio have been shortlisted for Kitchen Design Over £150,000 Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2023.

Ledbury Studio has recently completed a remarkable kitchen design project for a new penthouse apartment with breathtaking sea views and 360-degree terraces. The clients’ vision was to create a contemporary and glamorous space that harmonized with the architectural nature of the apartment, which boasts full height glazed windows and doors for a seamless indoor-outdoor living experience.

A key challenge in the design process was the absence of internal walls and the presence of an open glazed staircase, making every element of the kitchen visible from all sides. Ledbury Studio rose to the occasion by conceptualizing each component of the kitchen in a freestanding context. The backs and tops of the tall cupboards were clad in polished fluted stainless steel, while polished mica panels and a backlit screen made from wooden slats with backlit opaque glass slivers added an intriguing visual dimension. Ledbury Studio’s expertise in utilizing unusual and beautiful materials was showcased through the incorporation of polished mica, mirror polished stainless steel, honeyed onyx, hammered pewter, liquid bronze, marble, and quartzite.

To ensure that the space remained captivating both day and night, a variety of lighting techniques were integrated into the design. Backlit honeyed onyx surrounded the bar area, while underlit crystal quartzite was used for the worktop and the middle section of the bar table. A backlit screen by the staircase added to the enchanting ambiance. Additionally, the clients’ brief included the design of a functional and glamorous casual sitting bar area and bar table. The bar was equipped with essential features such as a TV, wine coolers, fridges, an ice maker, and ample storage for bottles and glasses. The shelves were made from polished stainless steel with antiqued mirror backpanels, providing an elegant display for glasses and bottles.

The challenge of integrating multiple areas and materials into a cohesive scheme was skillfully met, resulting in a sophisticated and glamorous yet practical space for family living.  The construction process presented its own set of challenges, with the top of the bar table alone weighing over 100 kilos. Every component had to be transported to the site via the main building lift, imposing strict parameters on the construction logistics. However, Ledbury Studio successfully overcame these obstacles, delivering a truly unique furniture element that seamlessly blends architectural and design excellence. The combination of cushioned leather, black and white geometric stone bordering, blackened steel structure, and stainless steel tray on steel legs resulted in a visually captivating and functionally versatile bar table.

The completion of this complex project stands as a testament to Ledbury Studio’s ability to transform a space into a work of art. The end result is a kitchen and bar area that exudes sophistication, luxury, and practicality, providing the clients with an exceptional living environment to be enjoyed for years to come.
