Lillie Helena Design House have been Shortlisted for Living Space – Europe Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2021.

Lillie Helena Design House were asked to create a penthouse that was unique and set apart from the rest of the apartments in the block. The purpose of the property was to be rented and therefore the penthouse had to be sophisticated with a design that was somewhat generic to be liked by many. That was a challenge the team faced, putting their signature style onto a space that still felt unique.

Space planning was incredibly important whilst designing this property as the owners wanted to have three bedrooms with four bathrooms and a large open plan. Not having a corridor is a must for modern builds therefore making sure that the flow worked well, and each space was large enough to make a presence was a fun and worthy task. The owners gave the team free reign over the design concept so they thoroughly enjoyed being able to get creative and use their imaginations of what they felt was the best possible layout and design.

In the hub of the busiest city in Malta, it was important that the penthouse catered for a family that although loved to spend evenings together huddles in the living room near the fireplace and hosting and entertaining, the days were busy and fast. The penthouse has a city vibe to it, which mimics the feel of the wider environment. A bathroom in each room was a necessity for such a fast-paced life. The penthouse also has a large terrace that has a sofa area with a large BBQ, perfect for hosting during the summer season, which works beautifully with the view of the Marina and Valletta, our capital city, across the bay.

The team used carpenters and blacksmiths for most of the property’s furniture. Hardly anything was store-bought when it came to the large pieces, from the walk-in wardrobe, huge wood and marble kitchen, cladded fireplace and TV wall and the extended bookcase which they created as a dividing space between the living and sleeping areas.
