Marbello Kitchen by Shape London Ltd

Shape London Ltd have been shortlisted for Kitchen Design Over £50,000 Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2023.

Shape London has successfully completed an impressive kitchen interior design project that showcases their expertise in creating spaces that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The compact kitchen is situated within an open-plan ground floor living space and required a design that would provide warmth, whilst remaining tidy through concealed cabinetry and offering a focal point for the room.

The use of vertical white-washed oak slats creates a play of light and shadow, both during the day and evening, when lit by recessed LED lights. The slats also conceal the varied widths and arrangement of integrated appliances and pull-out storage solutions, whilst hit and miss openings provide ventilation for the concealed AC system and pull-out shelves for coffee makers. The linear patterning across the surfaces, achieved by matching the slat widths, adds depth to the space.

A curved feature end cabinet creates a solid wall of tall units that blends into a more subtle visual layering of materials through open slatted oak doors. The display shelving, mounted in front of the Sapien Stone ‘Calacatta Macchia Vecchia’ splashback over the hob, is cleverly designed to create the illusion of a full wall of stone.

The waterfall island, intended as a secondary home working area or breakfast bar, sits opposite a concealed larder. This contrasting pocket is finished in luxurious dark American Black Walnut and Marazzi Saharra Noir stone, with mirrored lining and glass shelving concealed behind pale oak pocket doors. The secret cabinet for evening entertaining is a clever addition to the design, providing a hidden space for glasses and spirits.

Shape London has meticulously detailed the space using a natural material palette of stone, timber, and dark metal. The use of vertical timber slats to conceal varying appliance widths creates a depth to the surface through the subtle play of light and shadow created by the ample daylight and recessed feature LED detailing. The end result is a cleverly functional and discretely beautiful space that responds to the compact environment.

The use of natural materials, attention to detail, and cleverly concealed cabinetry has resulted in a space that is both practical and visually stunning. Their ability to work within a compact space and respond to the existing environment showcases their expertise in design.
