Metaphor Design have been shortlisted for Glasshouse Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2021.

A family home that has been designed to welcome the outside in, this residence thrives on it’s wider environment. By encapsulating the outdoors, Metaphor Design has given this home a unique atmosphere and vibrancy that, when paired with the textures and sophisticated colour palette, is also contemporary and complex.

The design concept grew from the idea of creating an open living space that connects to the kitchen. This area of the home is typically the hub of activity for families, and is the most used room when all together. With this in mind, the brief was to create an edgy yet sophisticated and warm kitchen – one that was welcoming and allowed as much light as possible in. To do this, Metaphor Design introduced floor to ceiling black mild steel windows and doors. This element not only allows the light to flood into every and any space it can get too, but also became a focal point for the modern space.

When working on this project, the designers wanted to explore the outdoor space as an extension of the interiors. The custom steel windows allows for an open and bright open living space whilst leading onto an oasis of a garden. These windows are used in a number of rooms throughout the home, where natural light is used as an amplifier of the character that is built through the neutral tones and rich textures. Hints of colour in the interiors are married with the natural vibrancy of the garden views for a playfulness in colour.
