Tell us a little about your background in design:
After studying Interior Architecture and Decoration in Paris, I joined the design team of the highly regarded interior designer, Alberto Pinto. Eager to explore other cultures and discover new horizons, I moved to London and joined the acclaimed design team at David Hicks Group, Richmond Design & GA Design, where I furthered my education and expertise on, led design teams in multi-million hotel design projects from which I refined both my creative and managerial skills.

In 1997, I co-founded Carter Tyberghein for which I have been the principal designer undertaking tailored luxury commissions.  I lead a team of designers, working in partnership with our clients to achieve their vision, both in UK and overseas.

I have been a member of the British Institute of Interior Designers for a decade. Over the years, I have appeared in several publications such as House & Garden, Home & gardens, Elle Decoration and Beta-Plus. In addition, I have been featured in numerous Andrew Martin Interior Design Reviews and I have been winner of the UK Property Awards 2014-2015 in the Residential Interior Design category.

How would you describe your personal design style?
Contemporary Classic.

Where does your design inspiration come from?
– The building and its surroundings.
– Client aspirations and requirements.
– My personal architectural vocabulary of shapes, forms, colours and textures.
– Sustained curiosity and fascination into the past, present and future.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
Sophistication and individualism are usually at the top of our client’s agenda. Design is inevitably influenced by the fashion world with predictions leaning towards silver, ultimate greys, bright and soothing colours, in uncluttered spaces with romantic touches for adding personality.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2021 and beyond.

  1. Home office/study design
  2. Unique artworks & accessories
  3. Lighting/audio visual design
  4. Indoor – outdoor Kitchen design
  5. Outdoor space design

If you could offer some advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?
Be creative, open-minded and pragmatic. Consider and listen to the space in hand. Simplicity and continuity throughout the property.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?
They are really good at bringing the industry together. Recognition and an opportunity to showcase our work is also really important as well as the exposure and credibility.

What projects are you currently working on?

  1. The conversion and internal restructuring of two loft apartments into one, (340m2 – 3 bedrooms).  The property, located in West London was originally part of old industrial building. Our scope of work encompasses all bespoke joinery, bathrooms, and kitchen.  The introduction of new a lighting control system and scene setting along with new concealed air conditioning system.
  2. A large house overseas spreading over 1200m2 with outdoor areas and swimming pool.  Although, we completed the design of this property 14 years ago, we have been given the brief to update finishes, lighting and AV systems as well as providing new furniture and furnishing schemes for this family home suited to entertainment and family life. The property consists of three levels connected by a circular glass lift leading to a skylight.
  3. A full refurbishment and extension of a mews house in Kensington (140m2) along with selection of furniture and furnishing including Client’s personal antique furniture. This property also includes a roof terrace for entertainment and relaxation.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?
Every project is given the same attention and care whether small or large. However, our current overseas project is perhaps a favourite due to its substantial scale and scope.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?
Every project provides challenges whether they are creative, logistical, or managerial and we relish being part of the process to provide design solutions. When the need arises we draw in consultants into the team who are experts in their fields to work closely together to achieve our goals and our clients’ requirement.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?
Personal touches such as artworks/home accessories, the carefully selected furniture and furnishing as well as architectural lighting to provide additions layers to the general atmosphere of the property.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?
To successfully complete our ongoing projects, win further projects and carrying on enjoying creating unique and timeless homes.
