Tell us a little about your background in design:
We have both been in the design industry for over 15 years with a background in residential new builds and renovations.

How would you describe your personal design style?
Classic, timeless, fresh with a touch of whimsy.

Where does your design inspiration come from?
We are inspired by the architecture we see in our travels and of course fellow designers  – we are always blown away by how much talent there is in this industry.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
Design is moving towards a more simplified approach. Think less clutter; but more texture, layering organic materials and creating moments in the details.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2023 and beyond.
1) Scale – playing with proportions 2) Textures – it’s all about adding depth 3) Nature inspired – warm wood tones, natural materials, greenery 4) Monochromatic color schemes – leaning more towards warm tones 5) Comfortability – creating spaces that feel inviting.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?
Do what you love and just go for it!!

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?
It is important to highlight the talent in our community and the International Design & Architecture Awards brings the best of the best together. 

What projects are you currently working on?
We have many exciting large new build projects that we are looking forward to seeing our design come to fruition as they progress as well as multiple renovation and furnishing projects. 

What was your favourite project to work on and why?
Truly, the project that has been shortlisted has been our favourite project to work on to date. We fully collaborated on the design for this home which was such an immersive and joyful process. The client completely trusted us and our design vision so it was amazing to see all of our ideas come to life!

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?
Definitely some of our renovation projects have been challenging but the outcome always makes it worth it!

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?
Natural stone, we would put it in every room!

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?
Further developing and growing SmithErickson’s e-commerce store “Curated by smitherickson” and expanding the SmithErickson team to make liveable designs and products even more accessible.

Your most treasured possession?

My piano, given to me by my Mom, it was the piano she learned to play on and taught me on as well. (Steph)

Your favourite holiday destination?
At Christmas, the mountains.  For true relaxation, the West Indies (Jenelle)

Favourite restaurant – Lulu Bar (Jenelle)  / Ten Foot Henry (Steph) (both located in Calgary, Alberta Canada)

Your favourite book, film & song?
Song – Anything from Alicia Keys, Adele, Sam Smith (Jenelle) / Book – All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr (Steph)

Favourite food – Sushi (Jenelle) / Wine and Chocolate! (Steph)

Your favourite way to spend an afternoon?
On a sunny patio with a cold beverage in hand enjoying good company (Both)
