Tell us a little about your background in design:
I graduated in 2006 with a Masters in Architecture from the University of Pretoria, South Africa where I also worked as part time lecturer. I worked for 2 years in London and then for 7 years in South Africa before relocating to the Isle of Man in 2013, where I established Verduyn Architecture.
Our projects range from modest to luxury residential developments as well as commercial, retail and hospitality projects in the Isle of Man, the UK and Europe up to £16m in value.
How would you describe your personal design style?
My personal style is uncluttered but layered. I particularly love contrasts such as contemporary and traditional design, polished and textured; anything that looks even better when paired together than they did on their own.
Where does your design inspiration come from?
I believe that good design is a response to its context and the requirements of the users, so I always let that inform the design. I ask a million questions at the beginning of the design process to get to know my clients so that I really understand them and how the design can improve the way they live.
In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
The quality of spaces we live, work and socialise in really impact on our daily life and I think people appreciate that now more than ever. A well-considered, beautiful, and practical environment improves our wellbeing, and this is becoming a priority for many people.
Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2022 and beyond.
Mental wellbeing
Sustainability
Practicality
Quality
Adaptability
If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?
I always suggest to my clients to select the ‘jewels’ of the project. These are the things that are important to the client and become the focal point of the scheme. In my design I will make these elements shine. A scheme with too many jewels will look over done but the right jewel in the right place will look timeless and elegant.
How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?
As designers it is important to challenge ourselves and strive for excellence. The International Design Awards is of utmost importance as it allow us as designers an opportunity to showcase the best of our work and to strive for the best designs possible.
What projects are you currently working on?
We have a range of projects both locally and internationally that we are very excited about. In particular, we are working on a number of luxury new homes that are sustainable and energy efficient.
What was your favourite project to work on and why?
Westminster Apartment, for which we are shortlisted, is definitely up there with our favourite projects. We had an incredible client who trusted us to deliver their vision and we were lucky to find a fantastic contractor with impeccable workmanship. Even though we managed the project largely remotely, from the Isle of Man, or perhaps because of it, communication was really good. All parties made the most of every engagement session and worked together to achieve the best possible outcome.
What was your most challenging project to work on and why?
My own house! I had so many ideas and found it hard to decide which ones to use and which to let go off. It has given me a new appreciation when dealing with my clients as I understand even better now how hard it is to make the decisions that will impact not only on your bank balance but also on your day-to-day life.
Which products/services could you not live without when designing?
It is so important to find a builder you can trust to bring your designs to life and to deliver the quality you are after. I value the builders and craftsman that take great pride in their work more than anything else.
What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?
Verduyn Architecture do both residential and commercial designs and every project is a new challenge. We look forward to showing off more of our work and to create spaces that will improve the lives of our clients.
Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself and your daily inspirations:

I know this is not really a possession, but I love the trees in the bottom of my garden. There are a few really old giants and I feel so lucky to have access to them. I go and see them every day and just admire their beauty.
Your favourite holiday destination?
Tuscany in summer – baking hot days followed by theatrical thunderstorms in the afternoon!
Your favourite hotel, restaurant & bar?
Versa, a restaurant on the Isle of Man. They serve the most elegant dishes created with ingredients foraged locally. Their environmental consciousness and creativity are inspiring!
Your favourite book, film & song?
Book – Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino
Film – Kill Bill
Song – Given to Fly by Pearl Jam
Your favourite food and drink?
A beautiful piece of salmon and a crisp glass of wine.
Your favourite way to spend an afternoon?
I have recently renovated my house and the novelty of being at home, enjoying the results of all the hard work, has not warn off. My favourite way to spend an afternoon is to invite some good friends over and relax at home.
If you weren’t a designer, what would you be?
