RAAW Design & Associates

Chen Residence by RAAW Design & Associates

RAAW Design & Associates have been shortlisted for Kitchen Design Over £50,000 Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2023.

As a complete renovation of the 200sqft kitchen space, RAAW Design & Associates has replaced the former outdated kitchen that had insufficient storage and circulation with an open concept that connects the cooking space and breakfast table. It elevates both function and form; with a RAAW Design signature contrasted warm neutral approach that introduces both natural rustic elements with soft sophistication, the kitchen’s new take on aesthetic reform becomes the foundation for the entire home. It introduces maximised storage, hidden niches, and a top-of-the-line cooking experience.

Perhaps the most important part of this interior kitchen renovation was the homeowner’s request for more storage, better circulation and anthropometric considerations that worked. The design takes these things into consideration in every detail and corner. With ample storage in the pantry wall, upsizing a near full height approach, the added storage capacities in this kitchen triple what was there formerly. Transforming the small service kitchen into the gourmet kitchen and removing the small island and countertops along the window wall, gave space for an oversized central island with double-sided deep drawers to be added. The result is a transformed space that not only speaks to a significantly elevated visual reformation but also immensely improves the functional and safety considerations of the space for its occupants.

RAAW Design & Associates worked on this space with the mindset that a well-designed space becomes a well-loved space, that is cared for better, lasts longer and as a result, has a longer economic life cycle. Sourced by the interior designer, the wood slabs native to the Canadian west coast that feature in the handcrafted and non-chemically finished breakfast table is a beautiful juxtaposition to the modern, hi-tech German-made Leicht kitchen. Kiln dried and hand sanded, the live edge is treated with Shou sugi ban, a Japanese charring technique to give it a dark black tone naturally. The staining process of the wood draws also uses a vinegar staining technique, completely ridding of the use of harsh chemicals in the making of the table.

The neutral taupe and warm coffee dual-tone palette provides respite against the white foundation of the flooring, walls and ceiling, and introduces the contrast of natural materials against the contemporary aspects of the kitchen for a highly considered design. The neutral colours and the contrasted dual in the space create a soft, modern sophistication that makes this space both unique and marvellous.
