Tell us a little about your background in design:
aving graduated from the University of Portsmouth with a first-class BA Hons in interior design, my first few years in professional practice were spent with a large architectural firm 3D Reid, where I acted as interior designer. This helped me to develop a better knowledge of the wider construction and design process and helped me to be a better interior designer. I then started to work with lead interior design practices from Blush Design, ND Studios, Louise Bradley and Hill House Interiors. Now some 14 years on I started my own business.
How would you describe your personal design style?
I like to create interiors that have a timeless quality to avoid trends that can date. I am inspired by nature and try to use its influence to create calming spaces that are also liveable.
Where does your design inspiration come from?
I am forever inspired by nature.
In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
As an industry it can be quite wasteful, but the design world is certainly moving towards being environmentally responsible. Through design and as a practice, we upcycle pieces of joinery/furniture, we make our clients homes more sustainable and we also select eco-friendly products and materials.
Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2022 and beyond.
Durability, Detail, Cost, Sustainability and Location,
If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?
Some designers have a look and feel which is great, but in essence a home is the clients home and it is important to bring their personality into the space and environment.
How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?
We are very excited to be nominated as finalist, as a young company built in lockdown it is an incredible honour to receive such a nomination from a well-recognised and respected organisation.
What projects are you currently working on?
We are currently working on a refurbishment in Hampstead and in Surrey and two new builds in London.
What was your favourite project to work on and why?
This is hard to answer, almost every one of my projects has been a wonderful experience in some way but I think my first significant project as Samantha Bartlett Interiors will always mean a lot.
What was your most challenging project to work on and why?
Working through lockdown and with the lingering effect of covid hasn’t been easy with material and staff shortages as well as rising costs. All our projects during this period suffered in some way but we were always honest and upfront with the clients to manage expectations as best as possible.
Which products/services could you not live without when designing?
My laptop, my suppliers and connections in the trade without these products/ services my job wouldn’t be possible.
What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?
We are a busy young studio; I’d like to focus on projects and ensure we continue giving an excellent and bespoke service but I’d also like to develop some aspects of the business. For instance, I built the company website myself (with no prior experience doing so!) and would like to improve this and showcase our completed projects.
