Ane Tandberg

Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc) Education: Interior design, KLC, London. History of Art, Royal Academy of Art, London. Bachelor of Science in Marketing, Oslo. Master of Retail Management Bang & Olufsen, Copenhagen.

I started Ane Tandberg interior design in 2000 and this became Tandberg Miller Design in 2015. I also worked as a Retail Development Manager for Bang & Olufsen from 2001 until 2003.

How would you describe your personal design style? Classic, modern & masculine with a feminine touch.

Where does your design inspiration come from? Empathise contrasting materials as leather, steel, wood,  fabrics- My travels, fashion and movies.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense? I feel that the trend is moving more and more toward pure products an environmental friendly solutions and reuse of old materials and design.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2023 and beyond.  Environmental friendly products, redesign, mixture of materials, old versus new, the art of combining different ethical design elements.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? Keep it simple. Invest in good materials and dare to be bold and think differently.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards? We are honoured to be shortlisted for the awards and we welcome the opportunity to be recognised internationally.

What projects are you currently working on? Mostly private residents, winter lodges & restaurants.

What was your favourite project to work on and why? There are many, so it is hard to pick one, but we recently did a bachelor pad where we totally rehabilitated a bland, rather small apartment, into a bespoke gentleman`s den. The tiniest detail was designed especially with all the clients dreams in mind. We had a close working relationship and the end result was a true reflection of the owner. The mixture of different fabrics and materials really imperfected the design in this project.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why? We did a commercial night club a couple of years ago. These types of projects can be challenging, as there are many variables to consider. Building regulations can have an effect on what choices are available to us, and there are often many parties to satisfy. Making the design edgy as well as timeless, is a fine balance. You want a “wow-effect”, but it needs to last.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing? The carpenters and suppliers we work closely with. They are priceless to our team.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months? Right now we are looking for new offices for our expanding team – which we are looking forward to finalise. Would not frown upon a little international attention and new collaborations either.

Your most treasured possession? My Norwegian designed boat, Cormate T27.

Your favourite holiday destination? Nothing beats Scandinavia in the summer, but I can not live without trips to London, Paris and other great cities in Europe to get inspiration and ideas for future projects.

Your favourite hotel, restaurant & bar? Hotel Costes, Paris and Mezzatorre, Ischia Italy

Your favourite book, film & song? I Am Pilgrim, Terry Hayes / Basic Instinct / November Rain

Your favourite food and drink? Dark chocolate & red wine

Your favourite way to spend an afternoon? Around the dinner table with good friends.

If you weren’t a designer, what would you be?
Head of Marketing for one of the biggest design companies in the world.

Anything else interesting? I have always been extremely interested in design. I have found the tiniest details sexy. I live and breathe for my job. It’s my passion.
