MARKZEFF have been Shortlisted for Lobby/Public Areas – Global Award in The International Hotel and Property Awards 2022.

The lobby, designed by MARKZEFF, is on the ground level of the Alila Marea Beach Hotel Resort, Encinitas, California. The floors are made from polished concrete with a custom designed pattern and the walls are blonde oak wood. There is a custom staircase that connects the lobby to the second floor pre-function.

Nature and all things organic were the inspiration for this lobby space. There is a large-scale custom stained concrete pattern on the floor that was inspired by the shadows that the sun creates on the sand on the ocean floor. The scale of the pattern is blown up large so at first glance guests are not sure what it is until closer inspection. The custom monumental staircase connects the lobby to the second floor and is made of white rods, steel and concrete. Artisan skills were used in the project, with a local artisan hand carving the reception desk out of a single piece of wood.

The design integrates the natural surroundings into the interiors by use of authentic materials and tones found in the surrounding environment. The energy, the colours of the ocean and dunes all fed into the decisions made about finishes, furniture and palettes throughout the lobby. The curved shapes of the walls and layout also mimic the shapes and geometry of the landscape and dunes that surround the hotel.
