Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc)
I have been designing for more than 20 years now and am best known for large hospitality, infrastructure and education projects. I also take on the occasional residential commission. From early on, I could see great value in a cross-disciplinary approach that could bring together architecture, interiors and branding into fully aligned, holistic project solutions. When I started Hachem, this was the foundation the company would be built upon. We never design for the sake of it; everything we do matches and builds upon the narrative of the brand for which we work.
How would you describe your personal interior design style?Unconditionally responsive. I start all projects with a blank canvas. So, the consistent feature is customisation. Each design has a unique purpose, and my work reflects this.
Where does your design inspiration come from?
At Hachem, we talk a lot about storytelling through design. Every brand has a story. Pulling together the threads of that story and turning it into a meaningful design response requires intensive research and reflection. Sometimes your instincts take over and it’s important to listen to them, too. But underpinning my approach is a rock-solid belief in the value of stories.
In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
Design is moving towards being more inclusive and less exclusive. The days when niche or unconventional materials and access to artisans were only for the select few are fading. Also, the world is becoming ever more connected, and consumers expect to be treated by memorable experiences wherever they go.
Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2020 and beyond.
Inclusive, reliable, authentic, sustainable and local.
If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to interior design schemes, what would it be?
Do your research and don’t be afraid to take a risk. A design scheme should be engaging and functional, and not just beautiful. Striking aesthetics should be a given; the other components need to be just as captivating.
How important are The International Hotel & Property Awards as recognition of talent and achievement?
The International Design & Architecture Awards and its organisers showcase what likeminded people can achieve. The awards play a central role in drawing attention to the best of architecture and design on a global platform. This is an important undertaking as the best talent and projects should be recognised though internationally acclaimed events, in turn pushing the entire industry forward and providing valuable stimulus for clients, consumers and emerging designers.
What projects are you currently working on?
Hachem is currently working on a number of exciting projects, primarily in the hospitality space, with commissions from Park Hyatt, Voco Hotel and W Hotel being our core focus.
What was your favourite project to work on and why?
The last project is always my favourite! It’s because you see the transformation from the concept on paper to its final, built form. It is a real buzz when the doors open, and people begin to interact with the spaces.
What was your most challenging project to work on and why?
The W Hotel Melbourne would be the most challenging. It’s a brand that requires total immersion. You need to truly understand what W is about in order to design it. It has many parts and layers, one of which is a core standard to reflect the city it is in. In that way that is unique.
Which products/services could you not live without when designing?
A good engineer is worth their weight in gold. A great lighting designer can make the project that much more special. And good branding is essential. It supports and drives the entire design process and provides the emotion that draws people back to the space.
What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?
To enjoy my family and friends, particularly after this pandemic. The focus is also to work on projects that I love and forego those that are just for profit.
Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself and your daily inspirations:
Your most treasured possession? While I appreciate the finer things in life, I don’t have an attachment to any one particular thing.
Your favourite holiday destination? Anywhere in Europe.
Your favourite hotel, restaurant & bar? Of course, W Melbourne and Curious Bar!
Your favourite book, film & song? I love all kinds of books, films and songs but my favourite is ‘The Portal’ podcast by Eric Weinstein.
Your favourite food and drink? Shish barak, a traditional Lebanese dish that always reminds me of my childhood.
Your favourite way to spend an afternoon? On the beach, just love the feeling.
If you weren’t a designer, what would you be? Never crossed my mind. I’ve always wanted to do what I’m doing!
design et al only work with the world’s leading designers.
