ELASTIC have been shortlisted for Hotel Design – Europe Award in The International Hotel and Property Awards 2023.

The remake of the iconic “Hanikian” hotel, is informed by the topography and legend of its location on the Corinthian Gulf. The rigid modernist building is endowed with an organic form, after a design concept emulating the fluidity of lava, drawn from its adjacency to the Sousaki volcano.

The brief required a total remake of the iconic “Hanikian” hotel, dating from the mid-1970’s. The design concept for the new 166-room hotel is inspired by its location on the northern edge of the Greek Volcanic Arc, near the crater-less volcano “Sousaki”, which has been dormant for 2.7 million years. According to legend, the volcano is home to the giant Typhoeus, whose open arms span east to west.

The designers have taken this mythological reference as their starting point, creating a building that offers panoramic views and captures the fluidity of lava. The square volumes of the hotel have been re-imagined as a stack of pebbles, as if arranged by the giant himself. The three room typologies include luxury guest rooms and suites, each with indoor dining, two bathrooms, and a freestanding bathtub.

The public spaces of the hotel are equally impressive, featuring a lobby, an indoor sea view bar with a bronze sculptural countertop and an undulating ceiling, an all-day dining restaurant, gym, and spa, and a spectacular infinity rooftop pool with bar and lounge seating areas that offer stunning views over the Corinthian Gulf. The use of overlapping curved surfaces creates a visual brand language that is evident throughout the building, on exterior and interior walls, finishes, lighting design, and decoration.

The color palette used in the refurbishment is inspired by volcanic shades, including terracotta and amber, bronze mirrors, gold, and tinted glass. Custom-made functional furniture has been designed for all public spaces, introducing a contemporary sensibility inspired by key natural elements.

The “Hanikian” hotel is set to be a stunning addition to the Greek tourism industry, offering visitors a truly immersive experience of the country’s rich history and natural beauty. With its focus on luxury, comfort, and style, it is sure to be a popular destination for years to come.
