InterContinental Hotels Group have been shortlisted for Hotel Design – Europe Award in The International Hotel and Property Awards 2023.
The InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) commissioned a team of architects to design the exterior and interior of the first Hotel Indigo in Austria, located in Vienna’s Margareten district. The architects were instructed to create a building that would harmoniously blend in with the historical surroundings and have a clear connection with the city.
The hotel is situated in the lively 5th district, near the Naschmarkt, renowned for its stunning old buildings and numerous inner courtyards. The architects have cleverly designed a new building nestled between two old structures to create a green oasis in the midst of the city.
Guests are welcomed into the hotel through an unassuming entrance located in a striking façade. A narrow corridor leads to a secluded inner courtyard, filled with lush greenery, providing a serene and tranquil ambiance. The courtyard is encircled by traditional Viennese Pawlatschen, which are outdoor access galleries typical of the 5th district and Vienna.
The architects have incorporated elements, materials, and colors that typify Vienna, particularly the district around the Naschmarkt, into the hotel’s design. The Viennese tile parquet, a flooring technique prevalent in traditional Viennese entrance halls and underground stations, has been used to adorn the hotel’s interior.
The hotel’s garden concept has been extended into its interiors as well. The lobby features a conservatory with expansive windows that can be opened during summers to connect with the outside. The hotel’s restaurant, spread across 438 sqm on the ground floor, offers a seating capacity of 197 guests, and its large windows provide uninterrupted views of the courtyard’s greenery. Most of the 158 guest rooms offer views of the 185 sqm courtyard, with plants hanging from the balconies providing an added layer of privacy.
The hotel’s design is a beautiful blend of old and new, creating a magical garden oasis in the heart of Vienna’s Margareten district, reflective of the city’s rich cultural heritage.
