Beleco have been shortlisted for Hotel Design – The Americas Award in The International Hotel and Property Awards 2023.

Located in the Santa Barbara neighbourhood in Los Angeles, Kimpton Canary Hotel is inspired by the local Spanish Revival architecture and the California Riviera. Santa Barbara is a much-loved destination for weekend trips and other getaways, therefore Beleco wanted the design to translate a relaxed atmosphere but also reflect the urban feel of the area. 

Since the area is well known for its Spanish Mission heritage, the hotel’s design contains many Spanish revival references such as the beautiful arches, hand-painted ceramic tiles used on the walls, rustic wood and Saltillo tile floors. The painted wall treatment is also typical for the Spanish revival period and another reference to the city’s architecture. Materials and colours were thoughtfully selected in order to complete the authentic look of the building as well as reflecting the Californian setting.  

The designers selected an eclectic mix of furnishings and finishes within a clear conceptual narrative to create an inviting environment for the guests to stay and relax. Most of the design features are bespoke such as the hand tufted rugs, the mural behind the reception desk, or the lime wash paint on the walls which all together reinforce the artisan and authentic feel.

For this project, Beleco aimed to create a combination of traditional and modern architecture within the space. The design celebrates the heritage of Santa Barbara and highlights it by implementing some Californian touch to it.
