Merry Design Studio have been shortlisted for Hotel Under 50 Rooms – Europe Award in The International Hotel and Property Awards 2021.

This project involved comprehensive reform of the buildings, demolition and remodelling of most of the spaces, except those with historical significance that were preserved in their essence. More than 600 pieces of furniture have been recovered and more than 500 works of art.

Merry Design Studio have opted for the luxury of simplicity without fanfare but instead with the quality materials through original Spanish designs, which are respectful to the environment and that value the good work and innovation of Spanish suppliers. The designers tried to integrate a project that connects with the city of León – for the people who will enjoy it the most.

In the hotel rooms a more neutral colour palette has been chosen, but in the common areas Merry Design Studio have included more prominence with the blue tones. Another prominent place is the terrace, in which all green hues have been chosen to align it with the nearby grove and riverbank.

The main staircase and lobby are the largest spaces in the Parador, with white walls, valued ceilings and an impressive staircase. The colours are cleverly contrasted between mustard and blue and the spaces even include some pieces that were recovered from the original building.

The breakfast area is a warmer space featuring a clay crafts exhibition (Jiménez de Jamuz) and Expormim’s Bentwood chairs. There is great prominence given to the curtain in the breakfast which was created with fabric from Gastón and Daniela de Antiguos drawings by Arcadio Blasco 1950s collection.

The Hostal de San Marcos “is art in itself” and, therefore, lighting is key to the interior and is necessary to create a successful contemporary scenography that allows one to appreciate the historical architectural elements. In the case of the new atrium, where the ceiling by Lucio Muñoz stands out as an artistic element, the rest of the elements should not compete and that is why they are integrated with simplicity and warmth.

The new design is focused on Spanish comfort and luxury. A five-star hotel means service, comfort, well-being and a unique experience that Parador has always been linked to – a seamless mix between the historical and the contemporary, with its own language that speaks of Spain, its culture, its art, its crafts, and its welcoming character to the measure of the clients’ demands. Merry Design Studio have managed to respect the authenticity and cultural richness of the historic Hostal de San Marcos and, at the same time, adapt to the demands of today’s traveller.
