Tell us a little about your background in design:

My work is based in every respect upon transcending borders in out-of-the-ordinary ways, beyond all specialised disciplines and nationalities. My projects aim above all on attaining an atmospheric aura, emotional urgency and an ecologically substantiated sustainability, which is readily created during the draft phase. As with many international projects, the first “green” railway station at Frankfurt Airport or the “Kranhäuser”, the crane-like structures on the banks of the Rhine, have to a great extent become effective landmarks. In the remarkably unusual far-reaching complexity from architecture to urban development and on to interior and product design, compositions become possible in which all elements, from the smallest to the largest, interact harmoniously.

How would you describe your personal interior design style?

We are modern and matter-of-fact, equally oriented towards the future yet functional and emotional in the process.

Where does your design inspiration come from?

It always stems from the context. With the project Courtyard by Marriott, for example, it was the Black Forest that held my attention. Many ideas from the Black Forest flowed into it.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?

In the direction of sustainability. Sustainable products play an ever-greater major role. Otherwise design is on the go just as it has always been. Sustainable materials, however, are very important and significant.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2023 and beyond.

Innovation, 3D printing, artificial intelligence, form follows function, parametrics…

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to interior design schemes, what would it be?

My general advice is to recognise fundamental future developments in order to subsequently give answers with a long-term reliability at a very early stage.

How important are The International Hotel & Property Awards as recognition of talent and achievement?

It is always important to publicise and award honours to assure communication specific to a certain field. Not only in the sense of one’s own public relations work but for colleagues as well, for updating specialised knowledge and for learning processes in general.

What projects are you currently working on?

On the project Atmosphere by Krallerhof. A spa and wellness complex as the expansion of a historically anchored hotel in Austria. We have successfully managed to work using regional materials, craftsmen and suppliers. Even the wood for the pellet heating comes from a neighbour. In the case of this project, landscape, architecture and interior coalesce optimally; the draft was developed parametrically. In doing so, computer technology releases the architectural draft from conventional production conditions to an extensive degree.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?

I could name quite a few. For instance, as far back as my very first project, Car & Driver, because I had a completely free hand. Or Zayed University in Abu Dhabi, the “Volksbank Areal” in Freiburg, the campus for designer Tobias Grau near Hamburg.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?

Zayed University in Abu Dhabi posed a major challenge with regard to the construction time frame and the pace for all the processes, but also because an unusually large number of disciplines came together and the building was done in an Arab country.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?

The key factor is to have consistent control of the designing process.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?

.A whole series of building projects are going to be completed in the coming year/this year: Atmosphere by Krallerhof in Austria, “Strandkai Fiftynine” and “Deutschlandhaus” in Hamburg, “Hafenpark Quartier” and The Spin in Frankfurt, innovation arc in Augsburg, and a thatched-roof house holiday home on Sylt. A new hotel resort is currently in the planning phase.

Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself and your daily inspirations:

I concern myself with everything that makes life what it is. This morning there were ice floes on Lake Alster. I appreciate every second and perceive everything around me. That gives me strength, energy and inspiration.

Your most treasured possession?

A creativity that never stops flowing.

Your favourite holiday destination?

The sun ought to shine.

Your favourite hotel, restaurant & bar?

Zuma in Dubai, Japanese dining…

Your favourite book, film & song?

Due to a lack of time I rarely but eagerly immerse myself in the works of the great architects of Modernism. But these days what we’ve got to deal with is rethinking the future, not the past.

Your favourite food and drink?

Water and buffalo mozzarella with bread, from Naples.

Your favourite way to spend an afternoon?

My leisure time is work and vice versa.

If you weren’t a designer, what would you be?

Designer!

Anything else interesting?

Everything that offers the chance to carry my ideas further.
