QBar Johannesburg, Quoin Rock By YG Architects (Pty) Ltd.

YG Architects (Pty) Ltd. – Yuliya Gaiduk have been shortlisted for Restaurant – Middle East & Africas Award in The International Hotel and Property Awards 2023.

Quoin Rock Wine Farm decided to open an exquisite Wine lounge and Restaurant in Johannesburg to bring the Cape Winelands experience to Gauteng. This wine restaurant offers a variety of exceptional wines, produced by Quoin Rock & Knorhoek wine farms, together with Grappa, Gin, and MCC. QBar Johannesburg by Quoin Rock features a signature food and wine pairing with a specially designed tapas-style fine dining experience, perfectly paired with Quoin Rock’s range of wines.

The interior design concept was to bring the Cape Winelands experience to Johannesburg with symbols of wine production to create an ambience of Stellenbosch Vineyards in the “City of Gold”. The colour palette is a combination of emerald, golden and walnut colours. Brass, natural wood, charcoal Pandomo plaster, smoke mirrors and green marble are the main finishes in the interior space. All the furniture and most of the decorative elements have been designed by Yuliya Gaiduk and custom-made by other contractors.

You will see features like a hand sketch of Simonsberg mountain, by Yuliya Gaiduk, printed at a big scale on the fixed glass panel above the main entrance. A brass finished pillar (600 mm diameter) is representing the strength & heritage of the Vine & its branches, and a Cabernet Sauvignon Leaf wall panel is designed to illuminate the space at night. YG Architects applied attention to every detail. Every small piece of art & decor was a key idea behind the overall design & experience.

As you look up to the ceiling you will see 82 laser-cut Cabernet Sauvignon leaves filling the sky of QBar interior space. YG Architects found the real cabernet sauvignon leaf in Quoin Rock vineyards and traced it, then laser cut 82 aluminium panels and anodized them in golden and champagne colours. Now the ceiling is covered with the suspended golden leaves exactly from the vineyards.

The L-shape bar counter`s front façade is cladded with brass and two layers of green marble. It shows a 3D silhouette of Simonsberg mountain slopes with the spacious logo of Quoin Rock on edge. And on the right-side wall, just above the main banquette seating, you will see five massive 3D timber panels with a hidden light shining in different directions. These big 3D panels of triangles are separated from each other with smoke mirror stripes. It feels like the massive wall of triangles is broken into pieces because of the mirrors in between.

The idea behind the design was to create the most comfortable space, filled with the art pieces and symbols of the Winelands, where the client could come and enjoy a fine dining experience with wine pairings.
