Tell us a little about your background in design:

I studied for my BA Hons Interior Design degree at the University of Teesside. I was offered my first job in as a Junior Designer for Hotel Design company in London and have been designing for Hospitality ever since.

How would you describe your personal interior design style?

I design for ‘spaces’ and each has unique requirements. I like to maximise the potential of any space, so it starts with the planning then I picture myself physically there. A bit like VR but without the equipment!

Where does your design inspiration come from?

From any good design that I’ve experienced in reality, film or through the trade media.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?

I hope it is becoming more intuitive, involving all the senses. Due to extensive media, there is a lot more interest in visual design, but great design needs to be experienced. A chair not only has to look great but also feel great, to connect with the user. It should be more emotional.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2023 and beyond.

Experiential, Sustainability, Wellness, Natural, Beauty

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to interior design schemes, what would it be?

Design for the end user (the Guest) with a close handle on the operational aspect. There are many aspects in hospitality design to be kept happy.

How important are The International Hotel & Property Awards as recognition of talent and achievement?
It’s a huge benefit to any designer to be acknowledged for their work. Hospitality projects can take anything from 3 to 6+ years to create from scratch and become very much a part of you and your life.

What projects are you currently working on?

The G.A Group have so many stunning projects. I’m currently working on a luxury new build hotel in Japan, a high-end refurbishment in Goa, India and various F&B projects throughout the UK.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?

The Westin Yokohama is my favourite to date. The team involved were all so great to work with and they supported the design – this all contributes to a great result.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?

This was for a project in China, but this was mainly due to there being a barrier between us as designers and the Client (owner). Projects are always much more enjoyable if there is a good dialogue and collaboration between Owner, Operator and Designer.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?

My set of stationery…. I draw a lot, and a good wi-fi!

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?

To continue striving for that work/life balance.

My Son, who is pure gold.

Greece, especially the Islands

Teppanyaki style Kobe beef with an iced Gin and Tonic

Afternoon tea at a beautiful property with views to die for and the sun shining.

If you weren’t a designer, what would you be?

A gardener or country estate manager. I’d love the combination between architecture and nature.
